We thought there might not be a Sony Xperia 5 IV, as the phone wasn’t announced alongside the Sony Xperia 1 IV, but a new leak suggests that Sony’s compact flagship lineup will continue after all.
Sumahodigest (opens in new tab) found a post on weibo (opens in new tab) (a Chinese social network) which contains a partial list of specifications for the Sony Xperia 5 IV. The presence of such a spec list suggests that the phone is still in the works and the contents of the list are promising.
The Xperia 5 IV apparently has the same cameras as the Sony Xperia 1 IV, namely a 12MP wide sensor, an ultra-wide 12MP and – perhaps most excitingly – a 12MP telephoto, which can move around perfectly. between the 85mm and 125mm optical zoom ranges. This equates to a 3.5x and 5.2x zoom relative to the focal length of the main lens.
What’s more, the Sony Xperia 5 IV also comes in 8GB and 12GB RAM configurations – with the latter being 4GB more than you can get on the Sony Xperia 5 III, and a match for the Xperia 1 IV.
The battery can also match the Xperia 1 IV with 5,000mAh and apparently supports wireless charging, which the previous model does not.
A Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset is also listed, as is a 6.1-inch display and a choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage. Interestingly, Android 13 is also mentioned, but it has a question mark next to it, so presumably the source isn’t sure about that.
We’d take all of that with a pinch of salt, especially since the source hasn’t leaked anything in the past, so they don’t have a history yet. Another red flag is that this post has apparently been deleted – however, they made another post saying that the Sony Xperia 5 IV does exist, but that another Sony phone will likely be released before it.
Review: A long wait for an intriguing smartphone
Assuming this source is right in saying that another Sony phone will arrive before the Xperia 5 IV, that could mean the Xperia 5 IV is a long way off from release.
The mention of possibly running Android 13 is another sign of this, as this software is not expected to be available until October. Likewise, in the spec list they mentioned that the Xperia 5 IV is “close to the start of production”.
All this suggests that we will wait a few months for this. In fact, given that the Sony Xperia 5 III didn’t hit US stores until January of this year, we can even wait until early 2023. But that’s just speculation.
The Sony Xperia 5 IV might be worth the wait as it looks like its spec list is very similar to the Xperia 1 IV, but if the former form is anything to go by, it will almost certainly cost a little less, which is important. , as the Xperia 1 IV is prohibitively expensive.
If Sony also manages to include many of the same creative tools here that it has in its next-gen flagship, the Xperia 5 IV could be its most exciting phone in a while.
