A huge batch of leaked GTA 6 footage has surfaced online, confirming several details about the long-awaited crime fest.
Encompassing a huge range of ongoing gameplay, the leaked footage gives us our first glimpse of GTA 6 in action – albeit in a completely unpolished state. Gunplay and other gameplay features are shown, while character and setting details are suggested within the environment.
All this is very unfinished. Overlaid with debug information and technical metrics, the footage is clearly taken from an in-progress version of the game. But it’s genuine. Rockstar has confirmed that the leaked footage is authentic and has asked that many of the videos and screenshots shared on social media be taken down.
That leaves us to stitch together exactly what has been confirmed.
Vice City is back
Corroborating a leak from earlier this year, the footage suggests that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City – Miami’s fictionalized version of Grand Theft Auto. The clips show various city signs and buildings with the words “Vice City” and “VCPD” written on the sides of police cars (presumably an acronym for Vice City Police Department).
But GTA 6 seems to be set in a modern version of the city. While 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was set in the mid-’80s, the presence of smartphones and contemporary-looking cars suggests that GTA 6 will carry the metropolis into the present day. Although it’s not just the city you’ll be exploring. Some rural areas are also shown, as well as what appears to be a swamp. Some familiar venues will also return, including the Malibu Club and Ocean View hotel.
two character combination
The footage suggests that GTA 6 will feature two leads, as well as the series’ first female lead. This lines up with a previous leak, which hinted at the game’s dual lanes and suggested Rockstar was approaching characters with more political sensitivity than other games.
The footage shows a Latina woman named Lucia, according to debug information, and her accomplice Jason. They were previously described as a Bonnie and Clyde-like pair, and this footage certainly leans towards that. In a leaked video, the criminal duo is seen robbing a restaurant, holding the cashier and running away when the police arrive. Bonnie and Clyde are mentioned by name in one of the debug menus.
The shooting is similar to that of GTA 5, with some new toys and features. The player is seen wielding various weapons – including an assault rifle, sniper, shotgun, pistol, and rocket launcher – alongside improvised weaponry – such as a golf club, baseball bat, and crowbar. At one point, they toss their active weapon to their other hand and pick up a rifle from the ground to add to their inventory – both are new features.
It looks like you’ll also have some new moves to play with. A leaked video showed the player leaning his entire torso out of a car window while aiming an assault rifle in a full 360 degree circle. Elsewhere, the player is prone, crouching in cover, and carrying an NPC over their shoulder. This can allow for more sneaky, stealth-focused firefights.
A new radial weapon selection screen can also be seen. It appears to show a health kit or some sort of medicine, suggesting that players will be able to heal or power up mid-fight.
A lot of Easter eggs
Even this leaked footage shows some callbacks and easter eggs that fans will recognize from the wider GTA universe. Expect a lot of the business in the gaming world to return, with LTD Gasoline already showing up. LifeInvader – GTA’s tongue-in-cheek social media platform and thinly veiled parody of Facebook – also appears.
Five stars or bust
As expected, GTA 6 will feature the series’ basic wanted levels. The footage shows a five-star system like that of GTA 5, confirming that GTA 6 will not return to the six-star system that previous entries in the series had.
But the police had an update. If the cops see you getting into a stolen vehicle, they’ll look for you even after you’ve made your initial escape. It’s true to life — cars have license plates, after all — and suggests you’ll have to think harder about evading the law.
While the leaks didn’t show GTA 6’s character customization features in full, at least we’ve received confirmation of its existence. Lucia, the game’s main female character, is shown wearing different outfits and hairstyles, confirming that her strands and hair can be customized. It will be interesting to see the depth of GTA 6’s character customization options after Saints Row leaned heavily on the feature earlier this year with its granular boss factory.
