Focal has revealed a new set of beautiful headphones. This is not a drill, lovers of high-end headphones. This is the best territory for headphones and more.
The French audio specialist has been innovating in audio for over 40 years and its top-of-the-line Utopia range – spanning headphones and hi-fi speakers to custom-installed speaker designs and exceptional in-car audio solutions – was designed and made by hand. crafted in Focal’s headphones atelier in France.
The Utopia are, frankly, the best Focal headphones, more expensive even than the company’s glorious Focal Stellia – and they’ve just had a major upgrade.
What sonic updates can we expect this time around? The focal audio experts explored all the ways to improve performance this time around and, the brand tells us, they emphatically delivered.
Analysis: Focal’s nomenclature is simple – Utopia means perfection
Don’t expect this headphones re-release to be marked by a numbered iteration (this is the luxury sector and here, Focal’s product names don’t change or gain ‘2’ suffixes, they just evolve beautifully), but Does expect a series of nice updates.
First, there are the new ‘M’ shaped speaker drivers and grilles, beryllium and grilles. They are fully open and run without passive or active correction, from a remarkable 5Hz to over 50kHz. There is also a new, more advanced voice coil design using a copper/aluminium alloy (which was previously just aluminum).
Then there’s a lighter design for greater listening comfort, which was achieved using forks forged from recycled carbon fiber. Indeed, in what is nothing short of a design overhaul, the Utopia now clearly looks like the flagship model in Focal’s headphone family, with its distinctive honeycomb style – a feature that doesn’t just look good; the honeycomb design promises a more open sound with greater driver movement.
prices? Yes: $4,999 / £4,699 / AU$6,999 – we wrote it quickly so you’ll barely notice.
How do they sound? Watch this space – we can’t believe it, but we’ll be happy to test them out soon.
Want to buy a Focal over-ear product but need something a little less expensive? We hear you. See the company’s Celestee closed proposal, or Focal Clear Mg. (Yes, but we said ‘less expensive’, not ‘affordable’…)
