Nvidia’s big RTX 4000 graphics card unveiled on September 20 also incorporated a new take on its frame rate boosting technology, with the advantage that it can massively speed things up – although a closer look at the details that Team Green spilled in DLSS 3 produces some notable caveats.
If you remember, Nvidia has claimed that DLSS 3 is capable of boosting frame rates by up to four times, which means the enhanced game is up to quadruple the speed of the native resolution – not easy to say the least.
This came with proof of DLSS 3 in Cyberpunk 2077 witnessing a jump from 22 frames per second (fps) in native resolution (4K) to 85 fps with DLSS 3 and the new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode for the game (which is being introduced in the near future). In addition, Portal with RTX saw an increase of over 550%.
This was on a device with an RTX 4090 graphics card, Intel Core i9-12900K processor, plus 32GB of RAM, by the way.
However, those massive four- or five-fold increases seem like the exception rather than the rule, as you might imagine – the picture is very different with many contemporary games that have benchmarks provided by Nvidia.
F1 2022 is shown at 2.5x gain (with ray tracing enabled) thanks to DLSS 3, and Microsoft Flight Simulator has seen its frame rate double (from 50 fps to 100 fps). Warhammer 40,000: Darktide also witnessed a doubling in framerate (a little more, actually).
in another graph PC player (opens in new tab) flagged, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla achieved a more modest 1.5x increase, and both The Division 2 and Resident Evil Village showed a roughly 1.7x increase (with an RTX 4090, that is).
Keep in mind the other main caveats with DLSS 3 namely that it’s only for RTX 4000 graphics cards (the RTX 4090 and two turns on the RTX 4080 to start), and also the game should support it too. Nvidia told us that over 35 games (and apps) will be on board to start (although some of these are titles slated to release in the future).
Analysis: Temperament expectations – and could there be some initial instability?
It appears, then, that the 1.5x to 2x increases in frame rate will be typical for DLSS 3, rather than the quadruple action happening with this new technology for some of the best performing titles in the future. All in all, temper your expectations a bit if you’re imagining some of the wild impulses Nvidia touted as more commonplace – they won’t be making their way into existing games, it seems.
Of course, it’s no surprise to see some handpicked marketing with the fastest games being highlighted, because that’s how new product launches work – you show something in its best light.
What’s also worth noting here is that we’ve heard quite a bit of talk about DLSS 3 from YouTube leaker Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), who also had a lot of interesting things to say about Nvidia’s next-gen pricing Lovelace graphics cards . MLID cautions that they’ve heard that when there’s a lot of motion on the screen and a lot of action happening, there can be artifacts with DLSS 3. DLSS 2.0 was non-standard; but this really is pure speculation.
