Ted Lasso is a brilliant show. I love it, you love it, a lot of people love it. It was the uplifting TV series we all needed during the rough days of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to take shelter in our own homes.
While the multi-award-winning Apple TV Plus show remains one of the biggest TV hits of modern times, it isn’t immune to problems off the field – particularly during the development of Ted Lasso’s third season.
That’s why the recent tease that Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond are potentially coming to FIFA 23 seems like a diversionary tactic.
Yesterday (September 20), Ted Lasso’s official Twitter account hinted that the fan-favorite football coach would be included in the final installment of EA’s long-running football franchise. The tweet suggested that Ted and company would arrive in a football-based video game in the near future – the “Watch out Mario!” tag gave it. But it was a response from the official FIFA Twitter account that pretty much confirmed the arrival of Ted and AFC Richmond in the next game; The FIFA social media team simply following with the eyes emoji:
Bringing Ted, his teammates and the AFC Richmond first team to FIFA is a logical and intriguing move. It’s high time the Apple TV Plus series was recognized for its status as a global phenomenon in other industries. With EA ending its licensing deal with FIFA – the duo have been unable to reach an agreement on renewing their 30-year partnership – once their current contract expires, now is the perfect time to pit Richmond against clubs around the world. real in the world’s biggest football game franchise too.
The teasing, however, appears to be more than just a coincidence. Okay, FIFA 23 is less than a week away from release (at the time of writing), with the football title set to release on Tuesday, September 27th. Insinuating the arrival of Ted and Richmond a week before the game is released, then, could simply be a marketing ploy to spark interest in the game. and the show before the final season of the latter arrives.
There’s no denying, though, that Ted Lasso’s possible appearance in FIFA 23 is more than a mere coincidence. After all, this comes just days after a report claimed there were major issues with the show’s third season developing.
According to the news agency Disco (opens in new tab), Ted Lasso’s third season was beset by – to use football-based terminology – management and board issues. The report suggested that significant script rewrites, character arc changes, missed filming days and filming issues at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium had resulted in an endless production cycle that is starting to wear on the show’s cast and crew. Ted Lasso’s cast is reportedly contracted to the series until it’s completed, meaning they can’t pursue other projects or acting opportunities until production ends.
Production costs are also starting to cause problems. A source told Puck that Ted Lasso’s third season was already 20% to 30% over budget, resulting in Apple and Warner Bros. be completed.
The lack of clarity surrounding the ending date for Ted Lasso’s third season also means there’s no release date just yet, and that’s a big problem for Apple. Ted Lasso is the crown jewel in his streaming back catalog, and the longer fans have to wait for his third and potentially final season, the more likely they are to become frustrated and turn to Netflix shows, Prime Video series and offers on other platforms. . for your TV fix.
This will be the first time in three years that a season of Ted Lasso will also not be released on Apple TV Plus – seasons 1 and 2 will be released in August 2020 and July 2021, respectively. And, with the show’s cast uncertain when season three will release — co-writer and lead actor Jason Sudeikis recently told reporters (as covered by Puck) that it will arrive “at some point” — there’s not much confidence in a release date. release being announced soon.
Things looked upbeat for Ted Lasso on September 13, with the series winning several gongs at the 2022 Primetime Emmys. However, Puck’s report certainly rocked the ship and it appears there is an underlying lack of harmony developing within the field of Ted Lasso. If you believe in speculation, anyway.
All of this, then, makes Ted Lasso’s FIFA 23 tease seem like a way to put a positive spin on the show after a rough few days. From a cynic’s point of view, it’s a classic marketing ploy or PR stunt to distract from any negative publicity.
Of course, the tease might just be that: a coincidental hint for characters from a popular TV show making their debut in an equally popular video game series. It is possible that this announcement was always made at this time of year, with the imminent release of FIFA 23.
Still, it all seems a little haphazard. This is the first big test Ted Lasso has really faced when it comes to receiving negative press. The likely confirmation that Ted and company are coming to FIFA, then, is more than just fortuitous in our eyes.
