The new Apple iPhone 14 It’s barely been in hand for a week and we’re already hearing a lot more about the next phone to rule Apple’s realm, possibly called the iPhone 15 Ultra. We’ve heard that name before, but new leaks shed light on the entire next generation of iPhone 15 devices, as well as a phone to rule them all.
According to Twitter leaker @LeaksApplePro, Apple’s next flagship will differentiate itself from the Pro model more than this year. The new iPhone 14 Pro Max gets a bigger screen and bigger battery, but it’s exactly the same phone as the iPhone 14Pro.
-New naming scheme: 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Ultra. The 6.7-inch iPhone 15 “Pro” will be called Ultra and will be a little more differentiated, and that includes price. I hope it starts at $1199 at best. I will have more specific information about the features closer to release.September 19, 2022
According to the leak, the upcoming iPhone 15 Ultra will sit above the iPhone 15 Pro with not only a bigger screen and battery, but some potential camera upgrades as well. 8K resolution video recording is mentioned as a possible feature that could reach iPhone 15 Ultra phone without reaching iPhone 15 Pro.
Just like this year, Apple is expected to update the chipset platform only on its high-end iPhone devices, the expected iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra. The alleged iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, if Apple takes the Plus family forward from this year, should use the A16 Bionic chip. This chip is currently only available on Apple’s latest generation iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices.
Apple also expects to significantly improve battery life over the next year, according to rumors. The leak says Apple is pushing for another 3-4 hours of battery life, especially on its biggest phone. The new phone may also see a price increase. This year’s most expensive iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099 in the US. Next year’s iPhone 15 Ultra can start at $1,199.
The leak also suggests that all of Apple’s upcoming iPhones will come with USB-C. As we cry out for Apple finally adopting the standard on all devices, it seems like a tectonic shift to imagine that Apple will abandon its wholesale Lightning ecosystem on all devices. Of course, the European Union has already mandated that all manufacturers, including Apple, switch to a universal standard and add USB-C by 2024.
Review: Is an iPhone 15 Ultra an excuse for the Ultra price?
We’re inclined to believe that Apple could go with the iPhone 15 Ultra name. More differentiation in naming makes it easier for customers to know exactly which iPhone they are buying and why. Now that Apple has adopted the Ultra name for the top of its Apple Watch line, it makes sense to continue this trend in the iPhone family.
That said, a new name could also give Apple an excuse to enter a new price tier. Samsung sells an Ultra phone, and its Galaxy S22 Ultra costs almost $1,200 when there are no big deals or discounts applied. This phone comes with more camera lenses than its brethren, including a digitally-enhanced 100X spatial zoom that really delivers amazing results.
If Apple wants to go Ultra anyway, make an iPhone 15 Ultra. But if that phone comes with an ultra high price tag, there better be an ultra awesome feature boost to go with it.
